Meghan Trainor Tour 2015

MT and Tim TimI’ve been working with Meghan Trainor constantly since my last post and what a 6 months it has been!

“All About that Bass” stayed at #1 on Billboard for 8 weeks breaking records set by Michael Jackson.  Meghan’s album, “Title”, debuted at #1 on the Album Charts.  Her second single, “Lips are Movin”, became her second Billboard hit song.   In December we did the Jingle Ball tour with artists like Maroon 5, Taylor Swift, Sam Smith and Arianna Grande among others.

PJ LondonWe flew to London for the X-factor UK season finale and also did The Voice season finale here in the US.  We are currently finishing up the first leg of her first headlining US tour.  All dates have been sold out and the shows have been amazing!

I can’t say enough good things about the team out here both musically and technically.  I have been able to continue my engineering/broadcast work with Meghan but have transitioned into playing guitar, keys and programming playback as well.

In April we leave for 2 international legs of the tour and then continue in the US in the Summer.  Hope to see you all somewhere out there!

Meghan Trainor – The Ellen DeGeneres Show

My phone rings… I look at the number and don’t recognize it.  I answer expecting a recorded message informing me that I’ve won an all inclusive cruise and all I need to do is give my personal information to an associate in Nigeria.

Me:  Hello?

Phone:  Hey, you were referred to us by Drew Taubenfeld and we’d like to hire you to mix the broadcast for an Epic Records artist on The Ellen DeGeneres Show if you’re available for rehearsals and the show.

I’ve worked for various artists on quite a few TV shows and have  had several similar phone calls but this one ended up leading to a pretty cool experience.

The artist was Meghan Trainor and if you haven’t heard of her she is a 20 year old songwriter/artist that has already penned songs for country artists Rascal Flatts and Hunter Hayes.  Impressive stuff for a 20 year old writer but add to that she has her own song “All About That Bass” that as of now has 60 million views on YouTube.

Here is what made this particular gig so cool:

#1 – The first guests on the show were Kacy Catanzaro and Brent Steffensen from American Ninja Warrior… I LOVE that show.

#2 – The second guest was apparently Noah Ritter and apparently he is the funniest kid on earth.  If you haven’t seen him you’ve apparently been living under a rock…. just click on his picture and enjoy.

#3 – The third guest was David Spade and… well… Tommy Boy and Black Sheep… enough said.

#4 – It was awesome to see my friend Terry Fountain, the broadcast mixer on Ellen, and catch up with him…  and also mix on his incredible Studer console.

#5 – This one is the real reason for this being such an awesome day…   I got to be in the room with someone when their biggest dreams came true and their life changed forever.  Just after Meghan’s performance, Ellen walked on stage with a giant plaque and told her that “All About That Bass” had gone platinum.

I think Meghan was in shock but by the time we got back to our dressing room there was a joy in Meghan that I’ve rarely seen in a person.  I think the thing made the moment so refreshing was there was no sense of ego or entitlement… she was just in awe of the journey and thankful.

Our Ellen episode airs today…  also TODAY “All About That Bass” reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It’s a good day to be Meghan Trainor!

Studio Session: About A Boy (NBC)

This week I’m working in the studio on some songs for a new NBC comedy called “About A Boy”.  The show is very funny and is earning great ratings.

These sessions are headed up by Leonard Jackson who (with his lovely wife Laura) own and run Bleed101… a cool music licensing company that is BLOWING UP…. so happy for them!  Check them out….

It’s really great to be working with Leonard again.  We’ve done a good bit of music work together.  We met over a decade ago when we both worked at Guitar Center.  Leonard and I provided MANY children with the musical tools needed to make terrible life/career decisions and we also committed such heinous crimes against humanity as distributing Crate and Schecter merchandise far and wide…  It’s the musical equivilent of chemical warfare…. please forgive us.

Also working on these tunes are Andy Barr (guitar) and Kaumyar (drums).  Andy and I toured together for a couple of years with Miranda Cosgrove (iCarly)… he is a wonderfully gifted musician and songwriter.  Kaumyar is a great drummer and previously played with Andy Barr in a cool band called Big City Rock.

Good Times!

This 50+ year old Italian beauty needed some attention!  I fell in love with these guitars during one of my 36 hour “internet obsess-a-thons” where I can’t seem to put the computer away because of how deep i’ve fallen into the worm hole.  Those cyber-binges always seem to end with me spending money…  Continue reading
